The project was set up in 1987 by a group of local churches who were all providing a service for local people in housing poverty. The Homeless Action Service was built in 1992 with a considerable amount of support from local people and churches. We became a registered charity in 1992 and a limited company by guarantee in 1999.

We are a day centre based in Edward Street in Lancaster which provides housing advice to the roofless and those in housing poverty, we also provide food daily and shower and laundry facilities.

This service is provided by a small number of staff and many dedicated volunteers.

We also have an established team of workers providing Floating Support for people in housing need under the Government's new Supporting People Programme.

We support them with their daily issues, these can be debt, addictions or everyday worries.

Our clients are ordinary people who circumstances have altered their way of life, people who have been in care, come from broken homes, have addictions, come out of the services, come out of prison.

For twenty two years we have run a Christmas shelter, 24/7 from Christmas Eve for 5 days and nights.

There is nothing else in the Lancaster District which consistently gives this care.
